The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada
A regimental museum honouring Canada’s oldest infantry regiment and its ongoing legacy.
Location
Third Floor

The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada Regimental Museum occupies a major part of the third floor of the Casa Loma. Formed on April 26, 1860, the Queen’s Own is Canada’s longest continuously serving infantry regiment and has contributed soldiers to every major conflict in which Canada has participated from the Fenian Raids of 1866 to Afghanistan. During the Second World War, they were Toronto’s only D-Day regiment. Although suffering major casualties, they were the only Allied Unit to reach its first day objective.
Sir Henry Pellatt rose through the ranks from private to command The QOR from 1901–1912. At the time an extremely rich man, he was very generous to The Queen’s Own. In 1910 he personally financed a five-week trip for over 600 Queen’s Own personnel, plus officers’ horses, to sail to England to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of The Queen’s Own in 1860. The military exercises lasted from 13 August to 3 October. Pellatt was promoted to the rank of Major-General upon his retirement from The Queen’s Own Rifles regiment and made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1910. His son Reginald also served in the Queen’s Own Rifles, becoming Commanding Officer (1925–1930) and Honorary Colonel (1951–1956).
The museum is operated by the Regimental Trust Fund and Major (Ret) John M. Stephens, CD is the curator. For further information about the museum and additional online resources, visit the museum’s website: www.qormuseum.org
